What’s Really Driving Your English Pronunciation Progress?
In a world flooded with AI-generated, scripted videos, I wanted to do something different—something real. So I sat down to record a spontaneous, unscripted message straight from a live Accent Evaluation session I recently had.

But first, I want to share the powerful insight we uncovered—one that might shift how you approach your English pronunciation journey entirely.
💡 Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation
When I asked my student if she knew the difference between extrinsic and intrinsic motivators, she said she’d never heard of them. Maybe you haven’t either.
Here’s what I shared:
Extrinsic motivation is external:
“I want to be understood by others.”
“I want to sound professional or intelligent.”
“I’m tired of people asking me to repeat myself.”
Intrinsic motivation is internal:
“I want to feel confident when I speak.”
“I want to speak up because my ideas matter.”
“I want to become the best version of myself.”
❗ The students who progress the most in their pronunciation journey are those driven by intrinsic motivation.
Why? Because external opinions will always vary. You could speak flawless English and someone might still ask you to repeat yourself. But when you’re doing it for you, progress becomes more sustainable—and meaningful.
🎯 Active vs. Passive Participation
Let me tell you about Estephania, one of my students. She recently moved to a small town in the U.S. and needed a haircut. The salon didn’t have an online appointment system anymore. So, instead of avoiding interaction, she:
✅ Wrote a message (even though she doesn’t love writing)
✅ Got no response
✅ Drove to the salon, knocked on the door, and asked in person
And guess what? She got the appointment. Afterward, she told me:
“I said to myself, ‘Good job.’”
That’s what it looks like to participate actively in English.
It’s not just about listening to podcasts or reading articles (that’s passive). It’s about showing up and using your voice.
❤️ The Real Win
What may seem like “just a haircut” is actually a milestone in confidence. It’s an act of showing up for yourself—and when you do, you might just say:
“Good job, Paola.”
“Good job, Kseniia.”
“Good job, Yuan ”
“Good job, me.”
