How to Effectively Study and Improve Your English Pronunciation

You may not like this, but here’s the truth:

✅ You cannot improve your spoken English without actually speaking. Intentional, focused speaking practice is essential.

Over the years, many potential clients have told me they can dedicate 4–6 hours a week to “lose” their accents. And to be honest, I used to think that way too.

When I was learning my second language abroad, I felt pressure to speak clearly as soon as possible. So, I crammed through study sessions every evening:

Picture this — me, a pile of books, an old iPod Touch playing Spanish music, and a notebook. I’d listen to the songs, write down words I didn’t know, look them up in the dictionary, and add them to my vocabulary list. I did this for hours alone in my tiny studio apartment. I used the same method when I learned K’iche.

But here’s the truth: what really helped me become fluent wasn’t the hours I spent studying. It was having a plan — and actually talking to people. Focusing on one specific word, phrase, or sound in real conversations made all the difference.

✨ The key takeaway: consistency beats intensity. One small, consistent effort every day is far more effective than occasional marathon study sessions.

To make your practice even more effective, I use the 80/20 rule with my clients.

The idea is simple: 80% of your results come from focusing on the 20% of sounds, words, or phrases that will have the biggest impact on your clarity and confidence. Study smart, not just hard!

💡 Watch the video to see how the 80/20 rule can guide your pronunciation practice and help you focus with purpose. You’ll also learn common challenges that English learners face — and how to tackle them.

After watching, ask yourself:

  • What is your personal 20%?

  • How can you use it to reach your pronunciation goals faster?

If you want help identifying your priority sounds and creating a clear plan, schedule a one-on-one Accent Evaluation today. In just 30 minutes, we’ll pinpoint your key areas, so every practice session counts.

✨Remember this: consistency is better than intensity. I repeat- consistency >intensity. What does that mean to you?
